Chemical dependency is a major health problem for Native Americans in this country today.
This program is primarily for Native Americans and is staffed by Native Americans. We accept referrals from Indian Health Services(IHS) and ADATSA assessment centers, together with other qualified/certified/ licensed agencies both in and outside of Washington state.
The Puyallup Tribal Health Authority offers a 28 day primary residential program pursuant to ASAM, PPC with the distinction of being the first certified intensive inpatient chemical dependency program for Native Americans in Washington state and the first IHS program in the United States to be accredited by the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Hospitals.A model of total abstinence is used with emphasis placed on the traditional medicine wheel in treating the whole person physically, emotionally/ spiritually/culturally. Also using the 12-step modality.
All treatment center's counselors are Chemical Dependency Professionals certified by the Department of Health Washington State.
Guests are involved in a variety of day and evening classes on the disease concept of chemical dependency, the family disease, the recovery process and understanding the 12-Step recovery program. Services include one-on-one counseling, group therapy, separate men and women groups, nutrition education, and relapse prevention, AA/NA meetings, self-help skills, alcohol-drug education, spiritual cultural classes, use of the traditional sweat lodge, family groups, basic health skills, and physical activities.
Guests who remain in the Tacoma area after discharge from the residential program have access to the Puyallup Tribal Treatment Center Outpatient Program.
Guests who depart the Tacoma area are placed in contact with their referring agencies for further services and treatment where necessary.
